Mitch Hawthorn and Brendan Thomsen first crossed paths at TAFE, two young blokes with a shared passion for building and a deep respect for doing things the right way. From day one, they clicked—bonding over timber frames, problem-solving under pressure, and a belief that a well-built home is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a place where life happens.

Their friendship quickly turned into something more—a partnership grounded in trust, work ethic, and a shared dream. On the very day they graduated, they shook hands and said, “Let’s build something of our own.” And that’s exactly what they did.

Thomsen & Hawthorn Building Services started from the ground up—literally. At first, they subcontracted to some of the region’s leading new home builders and high-end renovation companies. Working on large-scale projects early in their careers gave them a front-row seat to how well-run jobs operate—and just as importantly, how things can go wrong. They saw firsthand the value of strong communication between trades, the importance of detailed planning, and how much smoother a job runs when the site is respected and well-managed. Over time, their natural strengths emerged and shaped the roles they lead today.

Mitch had a sharp eye for detail and a natural way with people. He gravitated towards the numbers, the planning, and the conversations that shape a project before the tools even come out. His experience across high-end renovations and new builds laid the foundation for his role as Estimator and Sales Lead, where he guides clients through design decisions, scopes, and budgets with clarity and confidence.

Brendan, on the other hand, thrived on the tools and in the thick of it—coordinating trades, keeping sites running smoothly, and finding practical solutions under pressure. His years managing large-scale jobs from the ground up gave him the skills and leadership to step into the role of Construction Manager, where he oversees every build with precision, professionalism, and a hands-on approach. These early years taught them more than just how to build—they learned how to lead, how to listen, and how to make the building experience a positive one for every client.

Before long, people began asking: “Can you just do the whole job?” So they did. They took the leap into managing their own full-scale projects—from custom new builds to large, high-end renovations—and haven’t looked back since.
Today, Thomsen & Hawthorn stands for more than just two names on a sign. It represents a commitment to quality, transparency, and building genuine relationships. Mitch and Brendan are still hands-on, still learning, and still driven by the same passion that brought them together at TAFE.

Mitch Hawthorn

Mitch is the friendly face you’ll likely meet first. As our estimator and head of sales, Mitch is all about clear communication, upfront pricing, and making your building journey feel smooth from the very first conversation. Outside of work, Mitch loves skating, adventuring, and travelling overseas whenever he can. At home, he’s a proud family man with four kids and his fiancée, who keep life full and fun.

Brendan Thomsen

Brendan is the hands-on leader behind the scenes—and often on-site-making sure every build is done to the highest standard. With a sharp eye for detail and a calm, solution-focused mindset, he ensures things stay on track and stress-free. When he’s not managing projects, you’ll find him off-grid with his wife and daughter, exploring Australia in their caravan, or spending quality time with extended family.

Jewel Paskin

Jewel is the heart of our office. She keeps the wheels turning behind the
scenes—managing schedules, compliance, council communications and more—with
warmth and efficiency. Her diverse experience within the building/construction
industry and care make a big difference in every project. When she’s not keeping the
team organised, she’s with her granddaughter and extended family, or planning her
next travel adventure.
